So, you might be wondering how on earth you’re gonna cut a number out of a cake. Don’t stress, you’ve got options! For this cake, we traced our number on the back of an empty cereal box and cut it out. We then placed the number on top of our stacked cakes and used it as a stencil. If you’re feeling brave, you could totally free-hand it! If you’re not feeling brave (no shade) you can buy
number shaped cake molds that will bake into perfect numbers. As long as you top it with a fun assortment of candies and/or fruits, it’ll look adorable no matter what.

- 2boxes vanilla cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box
- 1 1/2 c.(3 sticks) butter, softened
- 6 c.powdered sugar
- 3/4 c.unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp.pure vanilla extract
- Pinch kosher salt
- Assorted candy

Preheat oven to 350º and line two 9″-x-13” pans with parchment paper. Prepare cake mixes according to package directions and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Let cool.
- Step 2Make buttercream: In a large bowl using a hand mixer or in bowl of a stand mixer using the paddle attachment, beat butter until fluffy. Add powdered sugar and beat until combined, then add cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt and beat until combined. (If you desire a thinner consistency, add 1 more tablespoon cream.)
- Step 3When cakes are cool, flip onto a cutting board level them with a serrated knife. Stack one on top of the other and cut out desired number. Discard scraps, or save them for another use.
- Step 4Unstack cakes and pipe or spread a thick layer of buttercream on top of one of the cakes. Stack with second cake and again frost top with buttercream. Garnish with candy of your choice.
